How to choose category and language: targeting on KnockAds

On KnockAds you choose where an ad runs by channel category and language: how a pair is built, who decides a channel's category and how to think it through.

In short

KnockAds shows your ad in the channels you pick with two criteria: the category of the channel (42 available) and the language of its content. For each category and language pair the app shows you the minimum price per click.

How a pair is built

When you create a campaign you choose at least one category and at least one language, and you can choose more. Each combination is a pair, with its own minimum price.

The category is the channel's, one of 42, translated into all 40 interface languages. The language is that of the channel's content, which can differ from the one you use the app in.

The 42 categories, by family

Work and money: Economy and Finance, Business, Marketing and PR, Career and Jobs, Real Estate, Law. Knowledge: Education, Languages and Linguistics, Facts and Curiosities, Literature and Books, Psychology and Self-help, Medicine and Health. Everyday life: Travel, Food and Drinks, Home and Architecture, Family and Children, Beauty, Fashion and Style, Healthy Lifestyle, Sales and Shopping Deals. Free time: Movies and Series, Music, Games, Sports, Humor and Entertainment, Art and Design, Nature and Animals. News and the web: News and Media, Politics, Technologies and Applications, Social Networks and Messaging, Telegram. At the end there is “Other / Uncategorized” for whatever fits nowhere else.

Some categories are sensitive. In every case the content of the ad must respect the law and the rights of others, and the advertiser is answerable for it.

Who decides a channel's category

The channel owner confirms the category, starting from a suggestion by the system. The owner's declaration is what counts, so it pays to write an ad that says right away who it is for.

The language of the channel's content

The KnockAds interface comes in 40 languages, but for targeting what counts is the language the channel's content is written in. If you sell a Spanish course to Italians, choose the Italian language.

Language is the geographic criterion: a Spanish-language channel is read in many countries, and one choice reaches them all. It helps to run the ad in the channel's language, because an English text on an Italian channel speaks to people who read in another language. A text written for that audience fixes that.

Three questions to choose by

  1. In which language do the people you want to reach read? That is your first language.
  2. What is the channel they read about? That is your category, or categories: pick those where your link really makes sense.
  3. How much do you want to spend on each pair? The minimum price changes with the category tier and the language tier: the article on the minimum price explains it.

In the diagram above, a Spanish course for Italians sits in Education and in Languages and Linguistics, in Italian and in Spanish: four pairs, each with its own minimum price. Start with a few well-chosen pairs. You can add more while the campaign is scheduled or stopped, as the step-by-step guide explains.
